Leaders lead and Managers Manage

Plato believed that kings are the only people who understand justice because they are the only people who grasp the philosophical concepts of leadership. In the world today, division and specialization of labour has made it easy for people to only focus on one area and see success. We therefore ask ourselves, what is the difference between managers and leaders?

Leaders are those who inspire others to achieve the visions that impact and change lives for the better through a way of projecting expertise that assures confidence in the hearts and minds of those who follow them. Managers are those who coordinate, organize, command, plan and support the executions that turn visions into reality.

It is possible for a leader to be a manager but often time, managers do not make good leaders and good leaders do not make good managers. When a business or any organization is starting, a vision, mission, value statements are written. This part is always played by the leaders. They are the ones who ask; “what is it that we can do to improve the life standards of people either through daily experience or totally eradicating a problem?” After answering this question, the matter is then transferred to the managers.

The key role of managers is to concentrate on the mission statement. A mission statement is a formal summery of the aims and guidelines of an organization. It highlights in brief, what must be done to make the vision become true. It is the manager’s task to implement using these guidelines within the organization’s peripheries to ensure satisfying results to leaders and people being served by the organization.

To make it more understandable, this is the simplified version of the subject and who it affects/responsible.

  1. Vision of the organization —– Implemented by a leader
  2. Mission of the organization—- Implemented by a manager
  3. Value of the organization——- Affects people served by the organization.

Leaders are the overseers of the entire organization while managers are the implementers of the dreams. It takes a lot of work for both managers and leaders to build a team synergy. One of the traits that is highly required to make this goal a possibility is patience. Even though you want to be patient, a successful leader understands the urgency of implementation. Once a decision is made or a great idea clicks in their mind, it must be implemented immediately.

An organization with a great chemistry between the manager and the leader is destined to succeed. Wisdom plays a pivotal role in such a scenario and it needs in-depth understanding of the leadership philosophy. Leadership and management shares one thing in common though, they both need good decision makers. People who understand the risks involved in every step of their action and must be willing to move on in case of any failure. Great leaders inspire ordinary people to do extra ordinary things.

To Move Forward, You Have to Move Backwards

?????????????????

A lot of things in motion started from going backwards. Think of a person shooting arrows from a bow, they first have to pull it backwards. Think of a person firing a gun to a target, the gun moves backward. How about a soccer player going to take a penalty shot? They first have to move backward to gain the momentum to hit the ball. A lot of things in this world involve going backward before you move to success.

Nobody puts a ladder parallel against the wall to climb to the top. They have to move the ladder backwards so that they can be stable and reduce the workload of climbing. To get lead, you first have to be lead, learn, make mistakes and then merge victorious, however most of us always want to take the shortcut to the top. We fail to recognize the importance of moving backwards.

To gain dividends and or build a profit margin, first you have to depart with money. Money does not come unless you invest which means moving backwards. Successful and happy investors understand this principle while most people always ignore it. Literally, it makes sense to move from zero to something however that is not the reality. Good things just never come.

A bigger percentage of people in developed nations believe that they will win lottery at some point in their life time. Now to win a lottery, you have to purchase the raffle tickets. This in return reduces your assets because they are expenditures. The possibilities of winning now become probable but you stand the higher chances of winning by purchasing a lot of lottery tickets.

Leadership of any sort have a lot of backward motion. Most leaders understand that the end is good and it is not good yet then it is yet to come. They therefore:

Never Lose Hope

Hope is the belief that everything is possible before you achieve or attain them. Hope can take you where no car, airplane, train, or anybody can take you. Hope can keep you a live with a great promise that the pain and backward motion you are taking or going through will end and that you are going to get a projectile shoot towards greatness. Most successful and great leaders bare the pains and losses of backward motion with a clear understanding that that is where it all starts. It is hope that keeps them alive.

Never Stop Believing

To believe is to strongly have faith is something? The last thing I expect from anybody I coach is to not believe in themselves. I believe that if you have your mindset to do greater things and you have faith in your potentials then nothing or nobody can stand on your way. You can never lose what you don’t have therefore try and set your mind that you can achieve it. Everything is possible and for some of us who are believers already know that with God everything is possible. You can achieve everything through Christ who strengthens you.

Never Lose Vision

Vision is the big picture, the end product seen from a distance. The product is always very vivid in mind before it is attained and it is that mirage that we see and have hope in that drives us towards changing them into reality. Our ideas are the most useless things we own if we do not turn them into action. The only way to make a dream come true is to wake up. Dreamers are slumbers and nobody acts when a sleep. Vision is like building a sand castle by the beach. A strong wind or a tidal wave can easily sweep it away. If you want a castle then build the real one. Do not run to the beach and make one on sandy beach and start shouting and dancing of how magnificent your work is. That is a useless vision.

Never Take Short Route

Short cut routes yields no long term success. It is a rout taken by the lazy, those who are quick to discourage and slow to act. They never say anything important but useless talks that kill vision. Sadly you might be one of them but it is never too late to change. Change now! If you are not under this category, then you are a leader, a pioneer of success. You understand hard work and I bet your top five friends are hard workers too.  Short cuts will cut you short, therefore short change them before they short change you.

Leading People

4-people-and-world

By Josh okello

Entrepreneurship is about dealing with people. Treat all equal and give them the best. They define you. Entrepreneurship is a road taken by a few and a bigger percentage of those few also fail miserably. In entrepreneurship or any leadership position, failing is the only thing guaranteed but for success, you must be ready to work for it. This then demands that you have the right team to work with.

Some people just like to make easy things impossible, get rid of them. Birds of the same feathers flock together. This is probably one of the most undervalued statements of all times. Look around you and count up to four of your closest friends. These are the people you hang-out with and have fun with when you are free.

Do these people believe in you? Do they believe in your efforts? Do they believe you can make it as a leader or as an entrepreneur? There are some people we entertain in our lives yet they cause more damage to us than good. Starting a business is so hard and stressful that it is wise to spend your time with either other business people or people who are successful in it and so is leadership of any kind.

Of cause this is not how society should be, but we either decide to sacrifice our time for the success of our business or entertain every Tom Dick and Harry that we meet. If you are honest with yourself, you will find it more beneficial to be with people who add value in your life than those who take value away from it.

It requires wisdom to discern who to be with. If your mindset is for success and happiness, then there will be tropism towards achievers. They should be your external stimulus to do more, dream more, and value more. This is the time, do not wait. If possible do not even finish reading this post, prune out people who always attract you to negative things and get close to those who have a mindset of success and happiness.

Failure is not enough reason to not try doing greater things. If birds of the same feathers really flock together, then why are you with people who do not change you for the best? I have been meeting a lot of business leaders and investors who are successful trying to learn what makes them successful. One of the things that they all agree on is hard work and being with good company. Your group defines who you are so stop wasting your time with people who have no dreams. The fact that somebody cannot dream big should not infiltrate in your mind. You coin your own destiny. Be smart.

How to Fight Fear

Dragons_mystical_creatures

By Josh Okello

The biggest challenge that most entrepreneurs and other leaders go through is fear. Fear is a dragon, it can consume you in no time, it is scary, and looks like a giant. It can kill you before your time, It can hinder you from success despite the potentials you have of blowing the completion out of the water. Fear always comes in two forms; the fear of success and the fear of failure. The former can be worst and devastating while the latter is equally as bad and can hinder you from freely expressing your potentials. The question we need to ask ourselves is “how do we slay this dragon?” It does not matter what form of fear it is, what is important is growing out of it which can be achieved by doing the following.

Avoid Cynics

Some people and surprisingly a lot of them, will forever doubt your potentials. What you need to do is to repel them with facts and works. They are not worth your time so why pay attention to them. They will reduce you to a tiny particle and blow you away like dust.

One thing you need to know is that you are already in motion. You are reading this article because you are a snow ball rolling down from a mountain, ready to cause an avalanche.  Sweep away the skeptics before they wipe you out. They will show you how much you do not know, how weak you are how uneducated you are and how useless your efforts are. Never believe them. Believe in yourself and understand that we all have our own weaknesses. The fact that you have a mindset of running your own business puts you in a better position to succeed in life because you are a thinker. Soon enough, you will be hiring your doubters to work for you. It is just a matter of time. Never give up.

Do Not Let Age Deter You

This mostly affects young ambitious leaders and entrepreneurs. People will rule you our because of your age but they fail to consider what you have between your ears. It does not matter whether you are tall, short, skinny, big, young or old. If you can reason well, use logic appropriately and see ahead, then nobody should stand on your way. Never listen to people talking behind your back. They were not meant to be in front so let them stay right there at the back. After all, you lead, others follow.

Know the Dragon

You cannot fight the war you do not know. Each and every one of us have their own dragons to slay. As I have mentioned in a number of my literatures that failure is the only thing guaranteed in this world. We should not fear failure because it does not need any effort to fail. It is the only easiest thing to achieve in life.  Know your fears and build a plan to overcome them. Courage becomes a strong weapon to fight your dragon.

Be Strong and Very Courageous

Courage does not mean you do not fear anything. It simply means you have your weaknesses and fears but you take a bold step to face them. We were born once, we live once and die once so why not be adventurous and try to be courageous. After all we do not want to be trampled upon by every single challenge we meet on our way. Go out there and try doing new things. Success favors risk takers so if you cannot take the risk to use the weapons you hold in hand to slay the dragon in front of you, you will live a miserable life until you get in your grave. Why live in regrets if you had the opportunities to try. Trying is always better than not trying.

Act Out in Faith

Do it big, we do not have time to act small. When you are going to a war, prepare to conquer kingdoms, set captive your opponents and above all act in faith. Believe that with God you can do everything. We are blessed with wisdom and God’s protection and love. Just believe that you can do it and when you do, do it real big.

How to Know You are an Entrepreneur

Darlene Lopez

By Josh.

This week on our Entrepreneurship Bench is non other than, an entrepreneur, a mom, a herbalist, an adviser, a consultant and a coach. Darlene M. Lopez. She takes everything she is doing as a ministry. She is ready to serve her clienteles globally through the help of internet and social media platforms. This is what she had to say on entrepreneurship

Josh: One thing I admire with you is how you keep people engaged. You are a net-worker for sure and I would like to learn from you.

Lopez: Thank you so kindly, that is very encouraging of you. I enjoy learning and you inspire me to keep pursing my dreams, knowing the outcome will be to fund ministries/work like yours

Josh: You are most welcome. So what are some of the challenges you have met on your way as an entrepreneur and a mom?

Lopez: What a good question, I think the most challenging thing thus far is that in both is being disciplined with time management along with always remaining a humble servant.

Josh: Oh yes that is a tight balance to hit. It is a challenge to me too. How did you come to learn that you are an entrepreneur?

Lopez: I never considered being an Entrepreneur, the concept had always interested me but I never fully pursued it but when people began offering to pay me for doing what I loved I began to entertain the idea but still didn’t pursue it.

I just love helping people in herbalism/natural living and friends and family and friends of family etc. would call me or ask for my advice etc. and I offered it and wrote protocols for them, they would come back with amazing testimonies thanking me over and over some would offer to pay me of which I would decline.

This sometimes would lead our family into small amounts of debt as I would purchase the necessary herbs and supplies for my clients thankfully it was never a burden to us and the debt never accumulated but nevertheless it wasn’t wise.

I still was reluctant to receive monetary compensation for my consulting it was something I loved and enjoyed doing, so I felt a bit guilty to receive money for doing what I loved, after all why charge for something that you can give for free and it is helping others.

I began to look into wholesaling houses and investing as a stay at home mom, I wanted to help contribute to the family income so Id take side jobs like providing childcare for families this helped but the concept of wholesaling and investing interested me but I needed information that only real estate professionals have.

We have some friends who are Real Estate agents, and have been in the business going on 40 years. I called her and began to explain my interest in investing in real estate and my interest in wholesaling, she educated me on the risks involved and the pros and cons.
Without discouraging my adventure she explained how I could get the access I needed in order to succeed, which the only way was to become a professional realtor.

I didn’t want to do that because well, it wasn’t something I had a passion about it was merely a means to make some extra income for our family, so I didn’t want to invest in schooling for this if I wasn’t going to pursue it passionately.

She then suggested I become her virtual assistant and manage her social media marketing for her and in exchange she would give me the access I needed to flip houses etc. I agreed and she paid for my social media for sales and success marketing class.

I became her online virtual assistant and I love marketing and social network, I have a passion and love for it, so I said sure why not. She offered to pay me and yet again I refused compensation because I felt guilty for being paid to do something you love.

This type of thinking some how held me back. I realized that there is nothing wrong with being paid, a worker is worthy of his wages. This led to me launching my own business.

I’m still a new entrepreneur and still learning to market myself as I Have spent so much time marketing and networking for others that doing it for myself on a professional level has been a learning experience.

For Success, You Have to Build Synergy

Statue of Lib Pyramid

We all know the United States of America as the only super power that has ever been but this is not true. Go back in history and study how many super power nations have been there. You will be surprised to find out that the continent that is now currently the poorest on planet earth was once a super power. Yes Africa. So what made Africa and or any other superpowers successful? The answer is simple, they build team synergy.

Think of the Roman Empire, British Empire which is also considered to be the most influential and effective superpower in history. On this post I am  only going to focus on Africa as the then super power.  Egypt a country that is today run by guns was once at the level of America in dominance and power. It ruled Africa and its neighboring countries mostly under the influence of kings and pharaohs.

We all have a dream of one day taking a trip to Africa to tour the stunning architectural work that was put in building the Egyptian Pyramids. These are some of the stamps of authority that we can trace about Pharaohs. Historical analysis tells us that the Egyptians built the Giza Pyramids in a span of 85 years between 2589 and 2504 BC.

It is estimated that some pyramids took up to 100,000 people to build yet it goes down in history that Pharaohs build the pyramids. One thing that these pharaohs knew was how to build team synergy. Thy knew that thy could not do it a lone and therefore they used other people to implement their dreams. Unfortunately most people who took part in building pyramids were slaves but nobody talks about them. Everybody thanks and wonders at the marvelous works of pharaohs yet I am sure they hardly placed a brick to build the most astounding architectural work in the history of the world.

Pharaohs dominated and oppressed people until they saw their dreams come true. In the world today, we do not have to practice that to see our dreams come true but we can pick a team of qualified people to implement our dreams for us. No successful person does it a lone. We need people and that is why human beings are social beings. There are some people who know more than we know, some are gifted in different fields that we are. Let us give them a chance to shine. This does not mean that we are going to be successful by randomly places people in our work environment.

We have to select the right people for the right jobs. One of the most important knowledge and wisdom every leader or entrepreneur should have is the ability to pick the right people for the right jobs.  Just as Pharaohs picked wisely their architects, engineers and slaves who were strong, skilled and proficient, we also need to follow suit but with one thing in mind. That we have to create opportunity for growth to people who serve with us.  Add value in their lives and not turn them to slaves.

Let them enjoy what they do, let them love their work place and above all motivate them to go extra miles. Treat your people with love because they are the ones who build team synergy that results into success.  You need people, you can and will not do it a lone.
